What is this?

Is this a seed? A cocoon? Coral? The house of a small sea creature?  I wasn’t sure but was fascinated by the delicate lace-like pattern on its exterior.

Round sea creature

And look at the perfect spheres of sand surrounding it. They are the by-product of millions of industrious, tiny Sand Bubbler Crabs sifting through the sand looking for organic matter to eat.  A large swathe of the beach from the high-tide mark are literally covered by millions of these tiny balls every morning. Watch this mesmerising video to see how they make these tiny bubbles of sand.
